Be Open to Godly Advice

(2) To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; (3) To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; (4) To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. (5) A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: (6) To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. (7) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. - Proverbs 1:2-7
In a nation where individualism and independence is pushed, it is sometimes difficult to see outside of our own thoughts and seek the advice of others.  A lot of the times, we think we know everything, so it's difficult to realize when we are wrong.  Thinking like this can be foolish and not wise at all.

I have the great honor of being married to a woman who is my best friend, and know that she is grounded in the Lord and open to the move of the Holy Spirit.  It is great because there are times when I can get set on a path and formulate my own scenarios and get lost in my own outcomes as opposed to the will of the Lord.  I am pretty sure I am not the only one who does this.  In those times, God will use those to get your attention when He cannot.  He will use those to relay messages, wisdom, understanding, reassurances, reminders, etc.  It is this that I cherish and it is those moments we realize that we may need to change our way of thinking and be more open to His will.

Now, I am not saying go and take the advice of every Tom, Dick, and Harry on the street.  That is not what I am saying.  The world is not lacking in an abundance of people with an opinion.  For example, you can find an abundance of books, studies, articles, etc. written by people on how to best raise children.  The problem with this is when you have an author who has no kids of their own.  Unless you have stayed up late nights, changed the many diapers, and have or actively raise a child on a daily basis, their opinion is nothing more than an observation.  It is not based on any of their person experience as fact.

It is those opinions who you know share the same values, experiences and relationships that you value the most. In 2 Corinthians 6:14, it says to "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?".  However, it doesn't stop there.  Just because everyone claims to know Jesus Christ and is a Christian does not mean they are still equally yoked as you.  You must be keen on testing them by the fruit they produce.  Jesus tells us to "(15) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (16) Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (17) Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit." (Matthew 7:15-17).

Don't get me wrong, God can use anyone at any time to achieve His purpose, ie, some random homeless person on the street.  While you may know them, they still can be used.  More than likely, it is the people who are closest to you and who we surround ourselves with that we tend to listen to the most.  The catch is making sure you separate fact from fiction and can identify from where their motive comes.  For that, we have to know Christ's Word for ourselves so that we can test the spirit from which counsel comes.

Be Blessed Folks.

Say What You Mean & Mean What You Say

As probably most of you out there will know, I am a straight shooter.  If the truth needs to be told, I will give it to you.  My wife, can attest to this.  When we first got married, I use to always tell her, "say what you mean and mean what you say".  I use to say it because I am not a mind reader and if you say something but really mean something else that is not my fault.  Say what you mean and mean what you say.

This leads me to the world of ever changing politics.  Well, you know what, not even politics, but rather those in high profile positions.  Lately, it seems that people have been saying a bunch of things that "they did not mean to say".  Folks are apologizing all over the air waves for something they said.  So, let's look at this a little further.

As we all know there is power in the tongue and left unchecked it can cause some serious damage, however, the tongue only says what is really in your heart.  There is a saying that says, "what's in you will eventually come out of you" and if it came out, you meant to say it! One of the most irritating thing to see now-a-days is to see folks apologizing for something they said because they risked backlash and/or tarnished careers.

Don't get me wrong, I do not defend any one who spews utter none sense, but at least I understand where they are coming from when they say it unapologetically.  When someone makes a comment that causes a stir, don't apologize because you were heard saying it or because it may hurt your career.  Either stand by what you said or genuinely apologize (I do believe there are honest mistakes) and offer no excuse like "what I meant to say was.....".   When you say, "what I meant to say..." you are really telling me, you are not sorry you did it, just sorry you got caught.  In addition you wish to douse some of the flames surrounding your recent comment.

James 1:8 says, that "...a double-minded man, unstable in all he does".  If you are saying one thing and your actions are doing another, you definitely worry me.  Get it together.  Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Wait a Minute, Wasn't That Just You?!

Hey Everybody and Happy Friday!  You know I am not going to beat around the bush, but rather I want to jump to the point.  If there is one thing that gets under my skin, it is for people to boast themselves up and put people down in the process.  This really bothers me and I see this especially in work places.

In an world where competition is eat or be eaten, people will try any tactic to "one-up" someone else at someone else expense.  In the Book of Romans, Paul tells us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought, but rather be sober in judgment (see Romans 12:3).  Here sober means "proper assessment of yourself"1.  So in a nutshell, Paul is telling us we need to be aware of where we are in our lives before we start passing judgment on others.  Also, I believe we can say this means we need to be aware from which we've come!  You cannot assess where you are and where you are going without knowing from which you came.

I want to take a look at Matthew 18:21-35.  It is rather long, but stick with it.  It says,

(21) Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"  (22) Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.  (23) "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. (24) As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[b] was brought to him. (25) Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.  (26) "The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' (27) The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.  (28) "But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.  (29) "His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'  (30) "But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. (31) When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.  (32) "Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. (33)Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' (34) In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.  (35) "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."

Here is where you find the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant, however, I want to show you something else.  You saw someone who lost their sense of direction.  The servant seemed to forget where he once was and learned nothing about it at all.  Not only was he unmerciful, but he was not sober in judgment when trying to accuse someone of owing him money.

If you recall, there was once upon a time that you didn't know what you knew.  There was a time that you did not know who you now know.  There was once upon a time, where you were "fresh-off-the-boat" at something and there was someone at some place who knew more than you did.  Despite all this somebody took a chance on you. Someone looked at you and said, "I think that kid will be alright under the proper guidance".

Before you start to turn your nose up at someone who you feel is beneath you, remember there was some point in your life where you had not arrived.  That person who you see now was you once not to long ago.

Incompetent? Are you Serious?

OK, I typically do not do two posts in one day, but I have to get this one off my brain.  While I was reading my morning news on CNN, I ran across a few comments about a particular article.  In the comments section, someone made reference that God is incompetent.

Errrrrrrrr!  God and incompetent in the same sentence?!  I understand that there are people who believe in God and there are people who do not believe in God.  I understand that and know there are some who will just not believe, BUT......for someone to call God incompetent tells me two things:
  1. The person recognizes that God does exists, and
  2. They do not claim to be an atheist.
An atheist would not give this description of God because to describe Him would to admit that there is one....that's not going to happen.  This leads me back to the point that the person recognizes that God was, is, and always will be.

Something....I mean something must have gone really wrong for this individual to give God this type of description, because out of all things we know that He is all-powerful.  If anything He is all-knowing and no words exist in our language that could accurately describe the Lord.  I would only have to say that God tells us not to be lukewarm for Him.  In Revelations 3:16, it says "So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth."   In a nutshell, God rather for you to be on fire for Him or nothing at all.  To be lukewarm about Him is an insult.

Be careful of your thoughts and what you let come out of your mouth towards God no matter how you may feel "wronged" by Him.  God is still God and at the end of the day we still answer to Him.

H1N1: Big Deal or Not?

H1N1 or the "swine flu".  Just what in the heck is it and why should we care? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it "is a new influenza A (H1N1) virus that has never before circulated among humans. This virus is not related to previous or current human seasonal influenza viruses."  So what does this mean for you and I?  In my opinion not too much.

Remember the Bird Flu?  Whatever happened to that?  Seems that it took a back seat and quietly went away.  Over the past 3 to 4 years, the WHO and the CDC have been talking about we are due for a Pandemic (well at least according to statistical trends).  Now we have the Swine Flu.  I think the WHO and CDC are correct in alarming the public that there is a new virus out there - after all it is their job.  However, you have to start looking at the media and drug companies for really pushing this thing and scaring folks.

People have died.  Yes, and I am sensitive to this.  However, more people die from AIDS, Cancer, etc. all the time and it never gets as much coverage as the new virus on the block.  Is it me, or do you find it amazing that from the time we first heard about H1N1 until now, there is a vaccine for it?!!  Vaccines and new drugs typically take years to clear the FDA (if ever), but this one has managed to infiltrate the markets and now they have run out!

Can you say the law of supply and demand?  You only make a little bit of the vaccine to see who "bites" and when you run out, there is a huge demand for more! Duh!  See where this is going.  I may be wrong here, but this sounds like a case for increasing the pockets of some drug companies and possibly some politicians as well.

Let's see how long this one stay in the news before the next flu comes out.  We've had the Bird Flu and the Swine Flu.....next up, Fish Flu.
